“You sure this thing’ll run?” asked Kyla.

“Well,” Omar began, “we have maybe a 60% chance of breaking through the thermosphere.”

“And the other 40%?” asked Leo.

“..we burn up halfway to space.”

“Fuck it” said Kyla, “I’d rather die on the way up than live down here.”

Omar began turning knobs while Leo nervously gripped his seat. Kyla stared forward.

“Okay. Three…” started Omar, “two…” a bead of sweat fell to the control panel below.

“and….ONE” he shouted while pulling a lever towards his chest.

A deafening wail rattled throughout the homemade vessel, engines firing on all cylinders. Turbulence struck the passengers, rattling each head inside their helmet.

Flames beneath the ship obliterated the earth below as the crew tore into the atmosphere above.

An envious horde of onlookers looked up from the ravaged Earth. Were they jealous of the ship’s catapult to the beyond, or the strong possibility of imminent death?
